Espadrilles, handcrafted shoe from Spain.
While people used to think espadrilles were only made for women, they have also become a component of men’s must-haves for summer. The espadrille is a very light sandal, made with jute rope and linen fabric. This shoe has its origin in Spain. The name “espadrille” derives from the word “esparto”, a plant originally used to manufacture its soles. It is in the beginning of the 19th century that they were sold in great quantities in Mauléon, French Atlantic Pyrenees, first worn by soldiers then by priests and finally by mine workers. The export to South America began in the 1880s.
Colored espadrilles for men.
At their beginning, espadrilles were only either black or in the natural color of the fabric. Each catalan region had its color. They are nowadays very popular in summer, especially in France and Spain. They are liked for their comfort and their simplicity. Brands like Armor Lux, Havaianas, Kenzo, M Studio or Paul and Joe present them in many flashy colors : khaki, red, yellow, printed with flowers, leaves or stripes (marine style). As they are only suitable for summer, a pair of shorts and a T-shirt are the best outfit matching with espadrilles, but you can also wear them with jeans.
